Abstract:
Hans Werner Henze{u2019}s greatest success live on DVD: for years Hans Werner Henze (born in 1926) has been regarded as one of Germany{u2019}s most important contemporary opera composers. He wrote his opera Der Prinz von Homburg, based on the play by Heinrich von Kleist and with a libretto by Ingeborg Bachmann, in 1960. The successful premiere of the touching musical drama about love, freedom and responsibility took place at the Hamburgische Staatsoper. A thoroughly revised version of the opera was first staged in 1992 at the Münchener Opernfestspiele (Munich Opera Festival) in the Cuvillies Theatre. The audience responded enthusiastically to baritone Franwois Le Roux in the title role, as well as to Marie Anne Häggander (Natalie), William Cochran (Electoral Prince of Brandenburg) and Helga Dernesch (Elector{u2019}s wife). Wolfgang Sawallisch was musical director, Nikolaus Lehnhoff director, and Gottfried Pilz did the stage and costume design. The enclosed live recording is a brilliant document of this highly celebrated opera production.
