Abstract
"Publication of the landmark report, "Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy" by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, introduced the idea of cytotoxicity as a biomarker for predicting toxicity in vivo. Different commercial cytotoxicity assay kits representing different biomarkers or pathways were available commercially for purpose of rapid predictive screening of potential toxicants. These kits representing different endpoints of toxicity were effective tools for rapid predictive screening of potential toxicants based on their cytotoxic activities regardless of their mechanisms of toxicity and chemical classification. No single assay was all inclusive to determine whether a compound is severely, moderately or not-toxic. This observation highlights the importance of using multiple assays covering a wide range of diverse key toxic processes for screening potential toxicants. It supports the hypothesis that a battery of rapid, simple and reliable cytotoxicity assays is an excellent tool for predicting in vivo effects of suspected toxicants regardless of their mechanism or mode of action"-- Provided by publisher.
