Abstract:
"My book targets undergraduate, postgraduate, and qualified counsellors. It presents a model of counselling called Integrative Person-Centred Counselling, or "IPC" for short, which teaches how to integrate counselling models with a person-centred foundation. Counselling books and university courses use the name "integrative" often to mean pluralistic or eclectic, rarely (if at all) combining counselling approaches into new and creative models. Some master's and undergraduate courses (e.g. orthampton, MSc in Counselling) use an integrative framework made specifically for the course, without teaching the common approaches. Other courses have no underlying theory of integration but teach a variety of counselling approaches (e.g. Northampton MSc in Counselling Children, Warwick, and Roehampton). And some courses have a central counselling approach like person centred or psychodynamic / object relations (E.g. Strathclyde and Birkbeck) with partial reference to other modalities. My book is different in taking person-centred experiential counselling as a frame for the major and most popular counselling modalities, and as such teaches the individual approaches but within a humanistic theory. This is quite different from the courses above and the books on the subject. Each chapter describes the theory and techniques with reference to a specific counselling model, recasting the models theoretically in a humanistic light. The reason this is novel is because the key to integration has been missing or unattended to from within the counselling and psychotherapy field. My method is to take a theory from systemic psychotherapy, called Approach Method Technique"-- Provided by publisher.
