Abstract:
"The task of finding something new to say about Ingmar Bergman's Persona (1966), a film historically hailed by scholars and critics as being not only amongst the director's most brilliant work but also an urtext of modernist cinema, is an unenviable one. The film has, inevitably, inspired reams of English-language scholarship alone, evincing a depth and diversity of reading that remains rare, in my view, in cinema studies. I contend that this capacious, seriously philosophical, and, at times, shocking film occasions obsession for the attentive viewer, critic, or scholar because its meanings simply cannot be pinned down. The film cannot be shown to signify exhaustively"-- Provided by publisher.
