Enabling the Facebook "Like" button

You can set up a profile to include a Facebook "Like" button in search results and in an item's detail display. This feature allows library users to put a link on their Facebook profile that is visible to their friends. Along with the "Like" button, there is a counter of how many people "like" the item.

If library users are not logged in to Facebook when they click the "Like" button, they will be prompted to log in.

When a library user "Likes" an item, Portfolio facilitates logging in to the user's account. But because Facebook doesn't actually open in the browser, and library users may forget—or not know—to log out, a subsequent user on the computer could easily gain access to the previous user's Facebook account. To prevent this, you can create a separate profile for in-library use in which the Facebook functionality is disabled.

From the Admin console, choose Profiles.

For the profile you want to work with, choose Edit.

Under "Search Options," select the Enable Facebook 'Like' Button field (for details, see Fields: Add/Edit/Copy Profile).

In the Facebook App ID field, enter your site's Facebook app ID. (For instructions on generating a Facebook app ID, see To generate a Facebook App ID.)

Save your changes.

To generate a Facebook App ID

Important: You must have a Facebook account in order to generate a Facebook App ID.

Create a Facebook App by logging in to Facebook, then going to http://developers.facebook.com/setup.

The system will ask you to verify that you are a valid user by requiring either a credit card number, or a cell phone number (that can receive text messages).

If you verify by cell phone number, you will receive a confirmation code via text message. Enter the confirmation code you receive.

Specify the Site Name (for example, the name of your library).

Specify the Site URL (for example, the URL for your instance of Portfolio).

Click Create app.

Facebook generates your new app, and the next page displays your App ID.

Once you have created a Facebook App, you can go back to edit the app by logging in to Facebook and going to https://www.facebook.com/developers/ (Go to My Apps > Edit > Web.)
